Teal Pumpkin Project & Halloween Treats

Halloween is almost here!! It’s time to start planning what you will

pass out to the kiddos in your neighborhood.

Did you know that 1 in 13 kids have a serious food allergy? Many of these common allergens are in popular Halloween candy – peanuts, milk, wheat, egg, soy, etc. Not to mention GMO’s, artificial colors, flavors, and controversial preservatives. Most Halloween candy does not include the ingredients listed on the package because they come in smaller sized versions sold in multi-packs. This is not only a parent’s worst nightmare, but it’s extremely dangerous for kids with food allergies.

Teal Pumpkin Project

Have you heard of the Teal Pumpkin Project? It’s a way to say “we support kids with food allergies”. You just paint a pumpkin teal or buy one from your local hobby store and place it on your front porch letting trick-or-treaters (and parents) know that you have non-food items separate from the bowl of candy.

Here are some non-food ideas for you to have on hand;

  • Stickers

  • Stamps

  • Glow Sticks

  • Bubbles

  • Finger Puppets

  • Spider Rings

  • Pencils

  • Crayons

  • Vampire Fangs

  • Crazy Straws

  • Kazoos

  • Books

  • Mini Notepads

  • Coins

  • Playing Cards

Purchasing Better For You Candy & Treats

Although, Halloween isn’t a “healthy” holiday by any means, there is no reason to throw all caution to the wind and litter the neighborhood with toxic treats. If you are trying to be conscious of what you are eating by avoiding GMO’s, artificial ingredients and preservatives now is time to stop buying conventional Halloween candy and seek out better alternatives.

If you are looking for healthier options many of the options/brands listed below can be found at your local natural foods grocery store or online Amazon or Thrive Market. Most are free of GMO’s, artificial colors/flavors and high fructose corn syrup, they use organic sweeteners and do not contain the top 8 allergens.
